Abstract:
- Spaulding encountered the larch canker while in Europe in 1922. He saw nothing like it in North America until A. C. Cline and S. H. Hunt of the Harvard Forest brought in part of the trunk of a young European larch with several distinct cankers in various stages of growth. Spaulding visited the plantation from which the specimen came, in Hamilton, MA. His examination confirmed that it was European larch canker damaging the trees.
