• Abstract:
  • In 1908 when the Harvard Forest was first acquired, there were about 100 acres of old fields and pastures on the property. Planting on these was begun on a small scale in 1909 and the volume of yearly planting increased as time went on. Later, where cuttings failed to produce suitable reproduction, planting was resorted to in order to insure complete stands. The early plantings were made at a time when little was known in this country about planting methods and their results. Consequently many methods, stock sizes, species, etc. were tried in an effort to find which were best. Fairly complete records of all plantings on the Harvard Forest were kept, and at the present time when the oldest plantings have reached an age of twenty-five years, it was felt that much valuable information could be obtained through a study of the results of all these plantations.
