- Abstract:
- In order to contribute toward the establishment of a post-Pleistocene chronology for New England, based on vegetational changes as demonstrated by fossil plants and pollen preserved in bogs, and controlled by the sequence of definite geologic events, the following areas are being studied. In nearly all cases the areas were selected primarily on two scores: their positions in the various forest types which now obtain in New England, and their relationship to the late-glacial and post-glacial forms (e.g. Morainal fossae, glacial lake terraces, abandoned lake outlets, etc.) which mark significant geologic events. Twenty areas were studied: Hudson Highlands; Cape Cod; Middletown, Conn.; Hadley, Mass;Turner's Falls, Mass; Petersham, Mass; Sudbury, Mass; Boston, Mass; Lowell, Mass; Hanover, N.H.; Colebrook, N.H.; Lake Winnepesaukee, N.H.; Fort Ann, N.Y.; Peru, N.Y.; Burlington, Vt.; Lewiston-Augusta, Me.; Machias, Me: Houlton, Me.; Bigelow Mtn., Me.; Mt. Washington, N.H..
