- Fire on May 10, 1947 at 3:15p.m. in the north central portion of plantation 37-E and the south central part of the Bd-Co area to the immediate north of the plantation; Compartment III, Prospect Hill Tract. The cause of the fire was the careless smoking on the part of the student body passing through the area. Five point zero seven (5.07) acres of plantation 37-E were burned as well as one point seventy-eight (1.78) acres of Bd-Co area. The fire was spotted at 3:30 p.m by the ranger occupying the Prospect Hill Fire Tower, he was unable to contact the HF Administration Building and the Town Warden of Petersham. He finally notified Mr. Estes, the state fire warden located in Orange, MA who in turn issued a call to the fire station at Petersham. The first members of the suppression crew arrived at the fire at 4:25p.m. The fire was extinguished by 5:30p.m.
