- This study covers three different areas in the vicinity of the Choate Farm, which is approximately two miles south of the village of Petersham. These areas consist of a pasture, an old hardwood stand and an old woodlot. The pasture has been known as such since 1847, while the total lack of stumps in the hardwood area and the general maturity of the trees indicates that it has never been cut. The woodlot abounds with old hardwood stumps with varying degrees of rot in them, and the complete scarcity of pine stumps show that the area did not go through an old field pine stage.
