- Abstract:
- The proposed research is a practical proactive approach to management of HWA in the northern forest ecosystem. Hemlock stands in northern MA and southern VT will be identified from aerial photographs, mapped and incorporated into GIS overlays. Using base-line data on HWA infestation levels, stand composition and other ecological features derived from extensive field sampling, we will develop a hazard rating system to identify sites "at risk" of becoming infested and succumbing to damage.
- Microclimate data to be collected in different sites. Recommendations to forest managers regarding sites where survey and management efforts should be focused to maximize resources while minimizing the impact of HWA.
