- Abstract:
- Though it is now widely forgotten or overlooked, Boston and Massachusetts have also played instrumental roles in fashioning the political models and vocabulary for the modern conservation movement. Enduring conservation innovation in English-speaking North America began with the creation of the Boston Common in 1634 and continued with the creation of the Public Garden in the first half of the 19th century. The example set by Bostonians played a critical role in the development of conservation thought and practice that subsequently blossomed in the United States in the last half of the 19th century.
