- Abstract:
- The impending loss of hemlock trees due to hemlock woolly adelgid (adelges tsugae) infestation prompts the need to identify the colonizers in the seed bank. Forecasting patterns of forest regeneration should include seed germination from a range of depths. In six hemlock and two hardwood stands at the Harvard Forest in Petersham, MA, I examined the distribution of buried seeds in the soil. I also studied the relationship between species and depth of burial based on three plant traits: seed dispersal, seedlings shade tolerance, and seed weight.
