- Abstract:
- The Harvard Forest was funded by Harvard University’s Library Digital Initiative (LDI) to jump start the process of digitizing and cataloging the resources currently held in our archives. The Harvard Forest is the best documented research forest in the world and is an irreplaceable asset. Since 1907, detailed records for all research and forestry operations on the Harvard Forest properties have been maintained in the form of extensive research files, maps, photographs, and other materials. This information allows researchers to interpret the landscape history of research sites, and analyze how past natural and anthropogenic factors influence current ecological patterns.
- The LDI project coincides with and supports the efforts of the Harvard Forest in the creation of the “Harvard Forest Virtual Classroom” allowing students and scientist to access materials while not being directly on-site, especially for seminars, laboratory courses in Cambridge during the academic year. The 3500 acre Harvard Forest is located 65 miles west of the main campus of Harvard University. In the past, this physical distance has hindered the extent to which students and faculty can use the resources at Harvard Forest.
