- Oaks have dominated forests in temperate Eastern North America for thousands of years but have declined and been replaced by more mesic and shade tolerant taxa in many areas during the past 300 years. The extent to which comparable historical changes have occurred in southern New England is largely unknown. In fact, much uncertainty persists with respect to the factors controlling the composition and geographic variation of pre-European forests in this region, especially the possible role of Native American activity (i.e. forest clearance and burning). To address these issues we compared colonial (17th and 18th C) witness tree data to modern tree data at three spatial scales in southern New England...
