- Abstract:
- The study used existing data sources and de novo field searches to document the distribution of spruce and hemlock-dominated forested wetlands in central and western MA. Field sampling of vegetation composition and environmental conditions was used to 1. characterize the vegetation of spruce and hemlock swamps and develop hypotheses about environmental factors that may influence vegetation patterns and species distributions; 2. revise classification of these community types in the draft Classification of the Natural Communities of Massachusetts (Swain and Kearsley 2000) and associated conservation ranking criteria; 3. document rare species occurrences, invasive species, and potential threats; 4 ground-truth DEP wetlands datalayers; and 5. establish permanent plots in representative occurrences for long-term vegetation monitoring.
- This final report was submitted to Massachusetts Natural Heritage and Endangered Species Program and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
