- Abstract:
- The proposal's overarching objective is to examine the functional impact of the loss of a dominant tree species. We will examine how a shift from conifer- to hardwood-dominated forests affect aquatic and terrestrial decomposition dynamics and we will explore the mechanisms which drive these dynamics in different habitats by using an ongoing natural experiment, in which a dominant conifer, eastern hemlock, is being killed by an invasive insect and replaced by deciduous trees over a large landscape and throughout riparian corridors in eastern North America.
