- American chestnut (Castanea dentata) was once an important canopy tree species in Appalachian forests before it was decimated by an introduced chestnut blight (Cryphoectria parasitica) in the early 20th century. Chestnut has become the subject of impassioned restoration efforts that have heightened awareness of the tree's former prominence in eastern forests. However, chestnut's former abundance has frequently been mischaracterized, with implications for widespread misunderstanding about the historic role of this iconic tree and the history of the Eastern Deciduous Forest.
