- Abstract:
- Harvard Forest Science and Policy Exchange (SPE) staff will assist the Cary Institute to develop and lead outreach activities that will increase awareness of the forest pests problem, solutions, and the urgency to act.
- 1. Develop an op-ed focused on urban trees in New York City, and use it to expand public interest in policy solutions. The purpose of the New York City focus would be to interface with the recent campaign to plant 1 million trees in a port city that is particularly hard-hit by pests and vulnerable to additional damaging species arriving via cargo. We will meet with city arborists to discuss benefits of the trees, costs of planting, efforts by city workers and community groups to protect them, and the onslaught of pests arriving in ports that challenges the future of the trees.
- 2. Journalist training. Develop an online webinar and outreach materials focused on helping journalists access accurate and up-to-date pests science information for their coverage.
- 3. Forest pest fact sheet/newsletter. Develop fresh messages about the forest pests policy context, the urgency to act, and pests current events including featured news and new emerging science addressing the forest pests issue. Distribute the fact sheet / newsletter to journalists.
