- Abstract:
- Ecosystems are being disassembled, rearranged, and restructured by myriad actions ultimately caused by people. For example, the interplay of people moving species around (leading to "invasive" species), and people modifying the environment ("climate change") both result in evolution (genetic change) of organisms, with unexpected and unintended consequences. This "unintentional genetic engineering" is happening all the time. Unlike deliberate cross-breeding, GMOs, introduction of gene-drive mutations for, say, mosquito control, or CRISPR-CAS9, these manifestations of unintentional genetic engineering have much greater potential to lead to dramatic environmental change. We encapsulate these processes in our Novel Ecosystem Generator a playful representation of a process engine that take existing systems as input and creates new ones as output - from genes to ecosystems.
