- Abstract:
- The goal of the Harvard forest REU program is to develop diverse teams of students and mentors who will connect long-term, site-based research and data networks to solve fundamental ecological challenges relevant to society. Harvard Forest REU will educate the next generation of ecological data scientists to responsibly 'harness the data revolution' - one of NSF's 10 Big Ideas for future research.
- -Build on our success in student diversity to recruit more mentors from traditionally underrepresented groups in science.
- -We propose to emphasize the ethics of data science as a core part of student education.
- -HF REU is a central educational and scientific activity of the Harvard Forest, which provides bot intellectual engagement and additional financial support to the program.
- -Students participating in collaborative groups are involved fully in the development and execution of cutting-edge research projects in ecological data science. We encourage students to develop independent projects that reflect their interests and observations and to practice communicating their findings to audiences that matter to them.
- -In its next iteration, the HF REU will cultivate the next generation of ecological data scientists and educators that reflects the diversity of backgrounds and experiences of undergraduate students in the United States.
