- Benton MacKaye was a 1905 graduate of the Harvard Forestry School and a lecturer at the school from 1906 until 1910 when he left to join the United States Forest Service. In 1921 MacKaye published a paper entitled, "An Appalachian Trail: A Project in Regional Planning" which inspired the creation of the Appalahian Trail. He and another graduate of the Harvard Forestry School, Bob Marshall (MF 1925), were among the founders of The Wilderness Society.
