Abstract: | Investigating Wood Growth, Wood Properties and Carbon Metabolism in Young White Pines in Tom Swamp There is a clear season cycle to wood formation in white pines with gradual transition from cells with large lumen diameter and thin cell wall (commonly referred to as earlywood) to smaller cells with thicker cell walls during the later growing season (referred to as latewood). However, this gradual transition of wood characteristics is sometimes disrupted y intra-annual density fluctuations. While intra-annual density fluctuation have been studied extensively for boreal and mediterranean forests, very little is known about them in mesic temperate forests. This data set was collected to investigate the occurrence, distribution and drivers of intra-annual density fluctuation in white pines at Harvard Forest. Samples of cookies and cores collected in Tom Swamp VIII from young White Pines that were part of the 2017 Compression and Girdling Experiment.
