  • Abstract:

    The HDW (Hardwood) microclimate and walkup tower at Harvard Forest became operational in April 2014. The site was chosen to represent the mixed hardwood forest around the EMS and NEON towers and to provide a platform for research projects without access to those towers. Microclimate data are archived annually and recent data are available upon request. Measured values include air temperature, relative humidity, PAR, net radiation, albedo, wind speed and direction, soil temperature and soil moisture.

  • Methods:

    Observation Periods

    Observation periods are 30-minute with the time stamp representing the end of the sampling interval. All times are Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5).

    Microclimate Sensors

    1. Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR): LI-190 SA quantum sensors--Licor.

    2. Co-located air temperature and relative humidity sensors: Campbell HMP 45C (replaced August 2014); Campbell CS215 (August 2014 – present).

    3. Aspirated Radiation shield: Model 43502 RM Young (2014-present).

    4. Radiation-shielded and ventilated precision air temperature sensors (2010-2014): Met-One, Inc., Grants Pass, OR, USA).

    5. Soil moisture sensors: Campbell CS-616.

    6. Net radiometer: Kippen Zonen, NR-Lite (2005-2014).

    7. Four component net radiometer: Huskeflux NR01 (2014-present).

    8. Wind anemometer: RM Young Wind Monitor 05103 (2014-present).

    9. Understory Air and soil temperature thermistors: homemade similar to T109 thermistor from Campbell Scientific.

    Measurement Locations

    All tower meteorological measurements are taken on the south side of the tower. The four component net radiometer is located at 28 meters. A profile of PAR, temperature and relative humidity are located at 28 meters, 18 meters, and 9 meters. Wind speed and direction are measured at 30 meters.

    There are two under story measuring site below the tower. US1 is located 10 meter south of the tower. US2 is located 30 meters southwest of the tower. At each site PAR and air temperature are measured at 1 meter. Soil water content is an integrated measurement of the top 10 cm of soil.
