Abstract:
Environmental change scenarios caused by low precipitation forecast species loss in tropical regions. We used one year of data from a rainwater exclusion experiment in primary Amazonian rainforest to test whether induced water stress, and covarying changes in humidity, soil respiration, and tree species richness, size, and total biomass and its diversity affected species richness and composition (relative abundance) of ground-dwelling ants. Induced drought reduced ant richness, whereas increased humidity and variability in biomass increased it. Species composition differed between control and rainfall-excluded plots. Occurrence of many ant species was strongly reduced, but some generalist groups of ants were favored by induced drought. The expected loss of ant species and changes in ant species composition in tropical forests likely will lead to cascading effects on ecosystem processes and services they mediate.
Methods:
We evaluated the ant community in an induced drought experiment. The two ESECAFLOR plots were each subdivided into 25 20×20-m subplots. Ants were sampled using pitfall traps in all subplots in October and November 2011 and again in February, March, May, July, August and September 2012. For pitfall traps, we used 500-ml cups (10-cm diameter) containing water, salt, and drops of detergent. The cups were covered to avoid overflow from rains and to avoid trapping larger arthropods and small vertebrates. We placed four pitfall traps in each subplot in each month (total sampling effort = 1600 pitfall traps). Traps were left open in the field for 48 hours. Accumulated ants were then transferred into vials containing 80% ethanol; individuals from each species in each sample were mounted and identified. Voucher specimens are deposited in the Entomological Collection of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi, Belém, Brazil. Data were analyzed in two ways: temporal replicates pooled within subplots (in spatial model) and subplot data pooled within months (temporal model). For each of the data sets, we tested the influence of the main effect (rainwater exclusion) and associated covariates (relative humidity, soil respiration, and vegetation structure) on ant richness using generalized linear mixed models, and on ant species composition using Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance. Finally, we classified species as specialists in the control and experimental plots using the multinomial Species Classification Method.
