  • Abstract:

Sand-plain ecosystems are a priority for conservation because they are uncommon, support numerous rare or uncommon plant and animal species, serve as groundwater recharge areas, and are threatened by land development. The 5,200-acre Manuel F. Correllus State Forest, in the central part of Martha’s Vineyard, is part of one of the larger sand-plain ecosystems in New England.

This GIS data package was created as part of a study on the history and ecology of Martha’s Vineyard and the state forest as part of an effort to understand sandplain landscapes and make management recommendations for their maintenance.

  • Methods:

    GIS Layers

Some of the layers in this data package include historic roads, conifer plantations, and larger forest fires. These data can be seen in Harvard Forest Paper No. 23: Foster, D. R., Motzkin, G. 1999. Historical influences on the landscape of Martha's Vineyard: perspectives on the management of the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest.

GIS layers are in State Plane Meters, NAD83, Massachusetts Mainland.

    hf364-09-landcover.zip

A landcover layer interpreted from aerial photographs by Janice Stone for Bill Patterson at University of Massachusetts, Amherst. The columns are: CODE – numeric codes corresponding to the NAME values; NAME – abbreviation for polygon type. The file named MV-land-cover-types_StoneAndPatterson.pdf, included with this zipped file, contains details on the landcover types.

Approximate locations of West Tisbury land divisions near MFCSF between 1750 and 1836 digitized from an original map in the Dukes County Historical Society

    hf364-11-openings-1897.zip

Land near MFCSF that was shown as cleared of forests on the 1897 US Coast and Geodetic Survey map

    hf364-12-conifers-1897.zip

Locations of conifer symbols (asterisks) near MFCSF on the 1897 US Coast and Geodetic Survey map

    hf364-13-plantations.zip

Locations of plantations that were created between 1928 and 1965 as determined by unpublished maps at MFCSF, the identification of areas that were machine-planted in the 1960s as interpreted from aerial photographs, and the locations of current plantations. Since plantations can decline or die, these may not always match up with plantations as shown in the modern vegetation layer found in hf364-09-landcover.zip. The columns include: YEAR_PLANT - the year (s) where trees were planted, QUANT_PLAN - the number of seedlings planted if known, SPECIESPLA -the species planted in each plantation.

    hf364-14-conifers-1960s.zip

Areas that were plowed and planted with conifers in the mid-1960s as determined by USCGS aerial photos from June 14, 1970. The plowing left distinctive furrows between otherwise intact soils with shrubby vegetation.
