- Over the course of 4 days in early May 1933, the relatively new Harvard Institute of Geographical
- Exploration (IGE), in conjunction with the U.S. Army Air Corps, undertook the 1st ever aerial photo survey of an entire
- state, of Massachusetts.
- The work was jointly led by aerial photographer Weld Arnold, of the IGE, and Lt. James F. Phillips, of the Army Air Corps.

- 12/22/2022 - Identification of this index was made by comparing it to a copy of the same index held in the MDC Archives. That image, shared by MDC Archivist Sean Fisher, is labeled with a MDWSC Plans Accession number and the title "Key Map of Aeroplane Photos taken by Weld Arnold - Instructor in Geography of the Harvard University". The aerial photographs are also referenced in 1934 correspondence between R.T. Fisher and Harris A. Reynolds, secretary of the Massachusetts Forest and Park Association.
